With so much attention focused on the phenomenon of Islamic State, the conflicts in Syria and Iraq, the terrorism issue and ‘radicalisation’, it would appear that the Palestinians are a side issue. Yet, their situation is referenced as a factor in all the more prominent Middle East-related problems facing regional and international societies and governments. Support for recognition of Palestinian statehood has increased in many quarters. The purpose of this Middle East Forum at City University is to take a fresh look at the place and prospects of the Palestinians in a rapidly changing regional, international and media landscape.
On the panel will be:
Dr Tareq G. Baconi: is currently a Research Scholar at Columbia University, USA, having recently completed his PhD at King’s College London. In his research he has focused particularly on the Hamas movement, its goals and strategy.
Elizabeth Jadon: a Palestinian from Jerusalem, who graduated in Law with first class honours from City University in 2012. A human rights campaigner, she has been particularly active in opposing the demolition of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Ahmed Ziat: a Palestinian from Balata Camp, who graduated in International Politics from City University in 2011. Ahmed has worked on various Palestinian refugee and diaspora projects and is currently studying for a master’s degree in Violence, Conflict and Development at SOAS.
Chairing: Dr Ahmad Samih Khalidi: Senior Associate Member at St Antony’s College, Oxford, and a writer and commentator on Middle East affairs.
