This protest aims to hold Britain to account for its culpability in the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in 1948
Whilst Palestine was under British protection in 1948, Zionist forces ethnically cleansed Palestinians from the major urban areas of West Jerusalem, Haifa, Jaffa, Tiberias and Safad and over 200 villages paving the way to what subsequently became Israel. They massacred to terrorise and drive Palestinians out of their homes. They carried out wholesale ethnic cleansing through mass expulsions of the Palestinian people.
Britain with its large army in Palestine did not act to stop this or to protect the Palestinian civilian population. On May 2nd 1948, under the British Mandate, Zionist troops massacred the village Ayn al Zaytoun. After hours of heavy mortar bombardment they entered and herded the villagers into the village square. Many of them were executed while bound hand and foot – the number killed in this way was possibly as many as 200. The remaining villagers were then taken to the edge of the village where, with troops firing over their heads they were ordered to flee having first been stripped of all their possessions. |
