The Promise is a brilliant British television serial broadcast in four episodes on channel 4. It was written and directed by Peter Kosminsky, with music by Debbie Wiseman. It tells the story of a young woman who goes to present-day Israel/Palestine determined to find out about her soldier grandfather’s involvement in the final years of Palestine under the British mandate just before the creation of Israel.

The drama was nominated for both the British Academy Television Awards and the Royal Television Society Programme Awards 2011 in the category of best drama serial

“It was so good, I couldn’t believe it. I think Channel 4 was extremely brave and impressive, and it is disappointing that critics of the film do not understand how much of a sea change it was to have a program like this.” Palestinian historian and author, Ghada Karmi

“Is Peter Kosminsky’s epic new drama set in Mandate-era Palestine and 21st-century Israel fantastic? Yes, it is. Ambitious, well-written, superbly acted and expertly made, it is also provocative and challenging: the possibility exists that it might even change people’s minds.” Rachel Cooke – New Statesman
