for the academic boycott of Israel\n[Ilan Pappe was born in Haifa in 1954
. Graduated from the HebrewUniversity in 1979 and completed his doctorate
studies in the university of Oxford in 1984. Pappe taught in University of
Haifa between 1984 and 2006 in the department of Middle Eastern History a
nd Political Science. Due to his support of the academic boycott of Israel
and his insistence of teaching the 1948 Nakbah he was forced to resign in
2007.\n            In 2007\, Pappe joined the Institute of Ara
b and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter and founded the European
Centre for Palestine Studies there.\nHe is the author of fifteen books mo
st notably The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (2006)]\nOur second speaker w
ill discuss the academic boycott with reference to recent litigation conce
rning the boycott’s legality in relation to issues of discrimination.\nL
ecturer in law at the School of Oriental &amp\; African Studies\, Universi
ty of London.\nProf Jonathan Rosenhead has been asked to discuss the natur
e of any bonus for those academics who choose to collaborate with Israel.\
nJonathan Rosenhead is Professor Emeritus of Operations Research at the Lo
ndon School of Economics. He is Chair of BRICUP\, the British Committee fo
r the Universities of Palestine\, an organisation of UK based academics wh
ich supports the Palestinian Call for Academic and Cultural Boycott of Isr
ael. It has been active in promoting the boycott in Britain and world wide
. He is the principal author of BRICUP’s pamphlet Why Boycott Israel’s
  Universities?\nChair: Douglas Chalmers\, Vice President\, UCU Scotland\nO
n 4th February 2011\, the Jewish Chronicle Online reported that GlasgowUni
versity professor Adam Tomkins was the year’s recipient of the Hailsham
Scholarship by the British Friends of the HebrewUniversity for work promot
ing understanding between Israel and the UK.\n            The p
revious year he had been a visiting professor at the Jerusalem university\
, where he ran a course on national security. It was reported that the Sch
olarship would facilitate the next stage of what Prof Tomkins hoped would
be “a lifelong series of collaborations with colleagues at the HebrewUni
versity”. In addition the comment “If\, as a result\, links between Gl
asgowLawSchool and legal scholars in Israel are strengthened\, this will b
e an added bonus.” was attributed to Prof Tomkins. It should be noted th
at Prof Tomkins neither confirmed nor denied the statements attributed to
him.\nFor over two years\, Scottish Friends of Palestine questioned the na
ture of this bonus with Professor Tomkins and the head of the School of La
w\, Professor Rosa Greaves. We questioned the apparent mandate which Prof
Tomkins had to speak on behalf of the School of Law at GlasgowUniversity.
While Professor Tomkins was prepared to enter into dialogue\, Professor Gr
eaves adopted the mantra of academic freedom and the need to protect free
exchange of ideas.\nFor over two years we supplied information to every si
ngle member of the School of Law in relation to the denial of educational
opportunity and academic freedom by Israel to the Palestinian under occupa
tion. On this subject the whole School remained mute. The question as to w
hy the sacrosanct nature of academic freedom with a state which consistent
ly denies it to others remains unanswered.\nThis Seminar is open to the pu
blic. There is no charge for entry. Please make every effort to attend and
publicise as widely as possible.\nTo assist with the planning of the even
t\, you are invited to register by contacting info@scottish-friends-of-pal
