Since 2007, an Israeli blockade has denied the Palestinian people of Gaza crucial resources, rendering the territory potentially “unlivable” by 2020, according to a 2017 UN report. In an effort to break this stranglehold, the Freedom Flotilla set sail for Gaza in May, with an international crew of solidarity activists and some medical supplies. More information on the Freedom Flotilla Coalition website, Facebook and Twitter.
On board the final leg from Palermo, Sicily to Gaza were three British citizens: two journalists and a Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon based in a London hospital.
In a flagrant breach of international laws, several warships and other vessels of the Israeli Navy hijacked our two boats, one which was sailing under a Norwegian and the other under a Swedish flag, in international waters. They forced the boats and everyone aboard to Ashdod where all of the participants were then ‘processed’ and taken to Givon prison.
Many of our participants were violently attacked and had most of their possessions stolen. Participants were strip searched repeatedly and many were denied medication and access to lawyers and phone communications. as they were held in prison for several days, before being deported. The boats and the medical supplies which are a gift to our friends in Gaza have been stolen.
Come and hear Dr Swee, Richard and Ian’s first-hand accounts of the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza and discuss how we can help break the illegal blockade of Gaza, enable freedom of movement and achieve a just future for Palestine.
