More than 1,000 councillors from across Britain and from a wide range of political parties have made our Pledge for Palestine.
The pledge commits council representatives to take all appropriate steps to (1) uphold the rights of the Palestinian people, (2) stand up to Israel for its crimes of genocide and apartheid, and (3) ensure their councils are not complicit, including through divestment of pension funds from complicit companies.
This matters, because local councils are aiding and assisting Israel’s violations of international law. Our research has found that local council administered pension funds invest more than £12.2 billion in companies enabling Israel’s crimes, including hundreds of millions of pounds invested in the arms companies that manufacture parts for the Israeli fight jets that have decimated Gaza.
The councillors who have made the pledge come from a wide range of political parties, including around 350 from each of Labour and the Greens, more than 100 Liberal Democrats, and hundreds more from the SNP, Plaid Cymru, Scottish Greens, Your Party, the Conservatives, local parties, and Independents.
They join more than 30 local councils that have already backed the call to divest pension funds from companies complicit in Israel’s crimes.
PSC will be building on this momentum in the May 2026 local council elections in England, where we are joining the Vote Palestine 2026 coalition, along with the Palestinian Youth Movement Britain, The Muslim Vote, the British Palestinian Committee, and the Palestinian Forum in Britain.
As part of this coalition, we will be calling on council candidates to pledge for Palestine as well. Look out for updates on that initiative soon.
