Founder of Women in Hebron, Nawal Slemiah, will be speaking about her experiences of setting up Women in Hebron, developing the community centre in Idna where many of the women work, about life under occupation in Hebron, and particular topics such as the recent arrests of young children. There will also be opportunities to take a look at her work and purchase some of the traditional Palestinian handicrafts.
Women in Hebron are based in the Old City of Hebron, Palestine, and was founded as a source of empowerment and income for Palestinian women. Part of the Idna Cooperative Association, the success of Women in Hebron goods being sold in the Old City of Hebron managed to generate enough money to open a community centre in Idna, a neighbouring city in the south of Hebron, where workshops and embroidery manufacture now take place, allowing local women to take part in earning an income that otherwise couldn’t be had in other part-time employment. Their products became so popular that Women in Hebron has now become a mainstay in the Old City, where experiences of racism and occupation are everyday reality.
Women in Hebron is not just about providing these opportunities to Palestinian women, but asserting the beautiful culture of Palestine as a form of resistance, signifying the important and honourable role of women in Palestinian society, and expressing the steadfastness of the Palestinian people who face brutal occupation every day in the city of Hebron.
