On his way to take up a new job with a major West Bank team, Gaza-born footballer Mahmoud Sarsak was arrested and spent three and a half years in an Israeli jail without charge or trial. He was finally released after a 96-day hunger strike, and an international outcry led by the indignant pleas of FIFA leaders and such famous footballers as Eric Cantona.
Alas, his experience is far from unique. Palestinian footballers are routinely harassed and humiliated by the Israeli authorities as part of a general policy of repressing Palestinian morale and self-esteem.
Israel actively works to suppress sporting activities in Palestine, and tries to prevent Palestinian sporting talent coming to the notice of the international community.
After his release, Mahmoud undertook an arduous tour all around Europe. Granted an extended visa by the British Government in recognition of the injustice he has suffered, he is currently on a speaking tour of the U.K. to support the Red Card Israeli Apartheid campaign.
