In the face of growing student support for Palestinian rights on campus, Israel and its allies are using a myriad of tactics to suppress support for Palestinian human rights, including support for the the Palestinian-led movement for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions until Israel complies with international law.
This includes lawfare; using threats of litigation and semi-legal arguments to attempt to prevent and restrict pro-Palestine events on campus. Crude lawfare tactics mean pro-Palestine events can be subject to a host of restrictions, including the imposition of ‘neutral’ chairs, and the condition that an opposing view must be heard.
Moreover, the statutory duties in the government’s Prevent agenda, and the pressure being exerted on universities to adopt the full IHRA definition of antisemitism, with examples and without caveats, can contribute to a stifling of voices speaking up for Palestinian rights on campus.
While most pro-Palestine events on campus go off without a hitch, it’s vital we’re prepared, and informed of our legal rights to campaign in solidarity with Palestine.
