Synopsis of event: Shareef Esoof will provide a brief report on his recent visit to Gaza and Colonel Desmond Travers will reflect on the work of the Goldstone Commission and on the Israeli forces operation “Cast Lead” from analyses conducted over the last four years.
Colonel Desmond Travers was one of the four authors of the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict, established by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), known as the “Goldstone Report”, which followed the Israeli attack on Gaza known as “Cast Lead” in 2008/2009.
Colonel Travers is a retired Irish soldier and peace-keeper. He was commissioned into the infantry corps in 1962 when Ireland was beginning to participate in UN Peacekeeping operations. During a career spanning forty-two years he served both in command and staff appointments in such operations in Cyprus, Lebanon, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
His last appointment was as Commandant of the Irish Defence Forces Military College.
Since retiring in 2001, he has contributed to a programme for the training of police, NGO’s and related professionals into the modalities of the investigation of war crime.
Col. Travers is Vice President of The Institute for International Criminal Investigations based in The Hague, which has to date trained over one thousand persons qualified in such work.
Colonel Travers will talk about the work of the Goldstone Commission and recent developments in Israel’s control of the Gaza Strip.
Admission is free, though a collection will be held to cover hall hire; Zaytoun products and similar products will be on sale to provide solidarity support to embattled farmers in the West Bank.
