The ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, which began in 1948 when 750,000 were driven from their homes, continues today.
Home demolitions
Since 2008 more than 2400 Palestinian houses and structures have been demolished in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, displacing more than 4400 Palestinians, including thousands of children.
Discriminatory residency rights
If you are Palestinian – even if your family has lived in Jerusalem for centuries – if Israel declares ‘the centre of your life is no longer Jerusalem’ they can take your right to live in Jerusalem away. Since 1967 more than 14,000 Palestinians had their
Jerusalem residency revoked by the Israeli authorities.
Exclusion
If Palestinians don’t have a Jerusalem pass they are not allowed to enter the city. Around 4 million Palestinians are prohibited from entering East Jerusalem freely –although tourists and Israeli citizens are allowed.
Israel’s Prawer Plan
In September 2011, the Israeli government approved the Prawer Plan for mass expulsion of the Palestinian Bedouin community in the Naqab (Negev). When fully implemented this plan will result in the forced displacement of up to 70,000 Arab Bedouin citizens of Israel and the destruction of 35 “unrecognized” villages.
Palestinians in exile and the refugee camps
When Palestinians were forcibly displaced in 1948 they were prevented from returning by the newly formed state of Israel. Israel continues to prevent people of indigenous Palestinian heritage from settling in their homeland to this day – which is in direct contravention of international law which has repeatedly reaffirmed the right of Palestinians to return home.
