When he announced that he was withdrawing from an Israeli Presidential Conference because of respect for the Palestinian call for boycott, Professor Stephen Hawking created a global debate about Israel’s occupation and oppression of Palestinians. A Guardian poll found that 62% of respondents supported Hawking’s decision.
PSC Patrons, Hilary & Steven Rose, write in the Guardian that “what really winds up Israel is that this rejection comes from a famous scientist, and it is science that drives its economy, prestige and military strength.” Also read Ben White’s ‘5 reasons Hawking is right’ and PSC’s Sara Apps on ‘free speech under attack in Israel’.
On the Today programme, John Humphrys interviewed Palestinian academic & PSC Patron Ghada Karmi and BICOM research director Toby Greene about Stephen Hawking’s decision.
Karmi was interrupted a total of five times by Humphrys as she attempted to put the case for boycott. Greene was not interrupted or challenged once. He was also given the first word and the last word. Full details of this interview>
